What makes my therapy different?

My work is rooted in the deep knowing, both ancient and evidenced-based, that the body carries its own wisdom and capacity to heal. When we feel truly calm, the nervous system becomes at ease. From that place of calmness and ease, the body remembers how to return to balance, and lasting transformation becomes not just possible, but natural.

With With over 18 years of experience in mental health, I’ve learned that our well-being can’t be separated into neat little boxes. Our mind, body, and energy are deeply connected—and I honor that by using a whole-person, or holistic, approach that’s tailored just for.

In our work together, I draw from a variety of methods, including somatic techniques, breathwork, mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Brainspotting. My approach is also IFS (parts) and Attachment Theory informed.

Symptoms—whether emotional, mental, or physical—are ways our body is trying to get our attention. They’re signals that something is out of balance or needs to shift. Our work together can help you get to the root of what’s going on by building a strong, trusting relationship with yourself, and creating a space where you feel safe enough to explore and understand what your mind and body are trying to tell you.

About Kia Byrd

I’m a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor based in North Carolina and a Certified Reiki Practitioner. I earned my Master’s degree in Agency Counseling from North Carolina Central University in 2007 and have been fully licensed for the past 16 years.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting people as a therapist in many different settings. I’ve worked in community mental health as a counselor, advocate, and educator for adults, children and families. I’ve also provided counseling as part of infectious disease research at UNC Chapel Hill and spent over two years offering group, individual and family therapy at a residential hospital specializing in the treatment of eating disorders.

My experience includes working with individuals, couples, and families who are navigating a wide range of challenges—such as trauma, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance use, chronic health conditions, and relationship difficulties (both with others and with themselves).

I live in Raleigh with my husband and our children. Outside of work, I love to travel, read, learn new things, spend time with my family, and express my creativity through designing jewelry and making therapeutic skincare products.
